Morocco Set to Demarcate Maritime Boundaries with Canary Islands

Morocco announced it will proceed to the delimitation of its territorial waters and its maritime borders with the Spanish Canary Islands in the Atlantic ocean.

In this regards, a draft law was approved on Thursday by the Government Council in a move that will further assert Morocco’s sovereignty in the southern provinces.

“This is a sovereign action in full compliance with the international law,” said Spokesperson for the Moroccan government, Mustapha El Khalfi, in a statement to the press.

The demarcation of Morocco’s maritime borders with Spain will put an end to the speculations concerning Morocco’s sovereignty on its territorial waters to the South, he added.

He said the draft law is in compliance with the International Law of the Sea, designed to enable Morocco to better monitor the circulation of vessels and ships, ensure sailing safety in the area and protect the environment.
