Morocco scored 70 points in the 2026 Trade Freedom Index, up from 67 a year earlier, placing the kingdom 93rd out of 175 economies worldwide and exactly at the global average, according to the index published by The Global Economy using data from the Heritage Foundation. Singapore topped the ranking with 95 points.
The index measures how easily goods can cross a country’s borders, accounting for tariffs as well as non-tariff barriers such as import quotas, licensing requirements, customs procedures and government intervention in trade. Morocco’s score has historically ranged from a low of 29 points in 2005 to a record 84 points in 2017, against a long-term average of 62.
Morocco also ranked 83rd in the Heritage Foundation’s broader Economic Freedom Index, with a score of 61.8 out of 100 placing it in the “Moderately Free” category, and seventh out of 14 economies in the Middle East and North Africa region. Trade represents 95.8 percent of Moroccan GDP, while public debt stands at 67.7 percent of GDP, inflation remains below 1 percent, and the trade-weighted average tariff rate is 12.6 percent.
Automobiles remain Morocco’s largest export category, with plants in Tangier and Kenitra supplying major global carmakers, while an aerospace cluster around Casablanca manufactures components for international aircraft manufacturers. Phosphates remain another pillar of exports, with state-owned OCP Group overseeing a sector in which Morocco holds more than 70 percent of the world’s known reserves.
Several government initiatives aim to reinforce this trajectory, including the New Investment Charter, which targets a private sector share of two-thirds of total investment by 2035 and offers cash incentives of up to 30 percent for export-oriented and green projects, alongside the Morocco Offer for green hydrogen, earmarking a million hectares for renewable energy projects aimed at supplying clean power to Western Europe.
