Algeria: 11 People Dead, 19 Injured in Orphanage Fire Tragedy

At least 11 people died and 19 were injured after an orphanage caught fire in Algeria. The age of the victims has not been disclosed. The death toll is still provisional, while the cause of the blaze remains unknown.

The fire broke out early Thursday at Mohammedia orphanage, located in the eastern suburbs of Algiers. According to press reports, among the injured, 10 suffered burns of varying severity, two were left with breathing difficulties, and seven received treatments. Five people with disabilities were evacuated to a safe location.

In addition to this tragedy, Algeria is hit by widespread wildfires and blackouts. Currently, wildfires are raging across the country. More than 130 fires were reported on July 15 alone. The damage has been devastating— especially for farmers and livestock owners, while the authorities’ emergency response shows deplorable deficiencies due to critical lack of resources, acute staff shortage, aging equipment and communication failures.
