DaKar is hosting the 85th session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (APU), with the participation of some fifteen African countries, including Morocco.
Speaking at the opening session of the two-day event on Wednesday, incumbent President of the 85th Session of the Executive Committee, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge (DRC), called for a collective and coordinated response to the multiple security, political, economic, climate, and health challenges facing Africa.
He also urged African parliaments to strengthen their role in promoting peace, dialogue, and justice in order to preserve the continent’s stability. He emphasized the need for stronger multilateralism, genuine climate justice, and African health sovereignty.
For his part, the President of the National Assembly of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, stressed, in a speech delivered on his behalf, the role of parliamentary diplomacy in bringing African peoples closer together and called for greater synergy among the continent’s various parliamentary organizations.
The agenda of this session focuses on reviewing the implementation of the organization’s decisions, assessing its financial management, and adopting reforms aimed at strengthening its operations and governance. the session will also examine and adopt the auditors’ report, establish a committee to shortlist candidates for the position of APU Secretary-General, examine the amendments proposed to the Rules of Procedure, and set up a committee to monitor contributions.
The African Parliamentary Union, which was founded in Abidjan in 1976, advocates joint parliamentary action in support of peace, democracy, good governance, and sustainable development.
It also promotes exchanges between African parliamentarians and their counterparts from other continents.
As an organ of the APU, the Executive Committee is made up of three members from each national group, elected for a two-year term. It is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Assembly’s recommendations, adopting the work schedule, approving the budget, and strengthening relations with regional and international organizations.
Morocco, a founding member of the Union, is represented in this Session by a parliamentary delegation, including members of both houses of the Moroccan Parliament.
