Joint Morocco–France Operation Dismantles Drug Trafficking Network, Seizes Nearly 2.7 Tons of Cannabis

A major blow has been dealt to cross-border drug trafficking networks. On Sunday, May 24, 2026, French law enforcement authorities intercepted a massive shipment of 2,692 kilograms of narcotics, primarily cannabis resin, and arrested two key members of the criminal network. This logistical and judicial success was made possible through high-level police cooperation between Morocco and France.

Although the operation took place on French soil, its success was largely due to the early involvement of Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN). Following the opening of a preliminary investigation by the Lille Public Prosecutor’s Office on April 13, the Lille Research Section (S.R.) worked closely with Moroccan authorities. The expertise and intelligence shared by the Moroccan security services proved crucial in mapping the drug trafficking route—from production to maritime and land transportation—and in anticipating the shipment’s arrival in Europe.

The joint efforts of the DGSN and the Lille Research Section enabled investigators to track a strategic transport vehicle before it could distribute the drugs in Lille metropolitan area, its final destination. Based on intelligence consolidated with their Moroccan counterparts, French authorities launched a coordinated judicial operation across four separate locations in France.

The main seizure took place at the Port of Sète, in the Hérault department. Upon disembarking from a ferry, a vehicle was intercepted by officers from Lille Research Section, supported by the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN) and several departmental and mobile gendarmerie units from Nord, Hérault, and Nîmes. Inside the vehicle, authorities discovered nearly 2.7 tons of cannabis resin.

The driver was immediately arrested. At the same time, another raid conducted in the Paris region led to the arrest of a second suspect, believed to be the network’s logistics coordinator. At his residence, investigators seized €34,000 in cash and a second vehicle.

The case reached a new stage on Thursday, May 28, 2026, with the opening of a formal judicial investigation by Lille Public Prosecutor’s Office. The charges brought are particularly serious, including organized drug importation, participation in a criminal organization for the preparation of offenses punishable by up to 10 years’ imprisonment, as well as the transportation, acquisition, possession, and distribution of narcotics.

After appearing before an investigating judge, both men were formally indicted. The first suspect was placed in pretrial detention. The second was also provisionally imprisoned, with his final status to be determined on June 2 during a hearing before the Judge of Liberties and Detention (JLD).

This dismantling once again highlights the effectiveness of the Rabat–Paris security partnership, where the responsiveness of Morocco’s DGSN has become an essential link in disrupting international drug trafficking routes to Europe.
