Washington Discuss Polisario Smara Attacks with MINURSO & Tells Separatists “Peace Requires Partners Willing to Negotiate”

The Trump Administration has sent the Algerian regime and its Polisario armed militias a strong message, saying that Washington “remains committed to peace through Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal” and that “peace requires partners willing to negotiate towards a brighter future”.

The firm and clear American position has been voiced by U.S. ambassador to Morocco Duke Buchan during a meeting held with Head of MINURSO Alexander Ivanko.

The meeting was announced by U.S. embassy in a post published Tuesday on its X account. Mr. Buchan “discussed the Sahara peace process with MINURSO Head Alexander Ivanko,” said the U.S. Embassy post.

“The Polisario’s recent violence drew resounding international condemnation and their continued refusal to engage seriously on the future of the Sahrawi people threatens progress”, underlined the U.S. diplomat.

“The U.S. remains committed to peace through Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal – but peace requires partners willing to negotiate towards a brighter future,” underlined Mr.Duke Buchan.

Following the Polisario rocked attacks on Smara, U.S. Mission to the United Nations condemned the aggression, saying “such violence threatens regional stability and the progress made towards peace”.

“These actions are inconsistent with the spirit of the recent talks,” had said the U.S. diplomatic mission, stressing that “the time to end this 50-year-old dispute is now.

As affirmed in UNSCR 2797, the Moroccan Autonomy Proposal lays out the path to peace in Western Sahara,” underlined the American delegation to the UN, calling on “all those resisting peace to genuinely commit to a brighter future. The status quo cannot continue.”
