Guinea-Bissau Reiterates Firm, Constant Support for Moroccan Sahara

Guinea-Bissau reaffirmed on Tuesday its firm and constant position on Morocco’s sovereignty over of the Sahara.

This stance was expressed by Guinea-Bissau’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Bernardo Vieira, during a press briefing following talks in Rabat with his Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita.

João Bernardo Vieira reiterated his country’s unwavering support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Morocco over all its territory, including the Sahara region.

He also reaffirmed support for the Moroccan autonomy Initiative, considering it the only credible and realistic solution to this regional dispute.

The Bissau-Guinean top diplomat welcomed the UN Security Council’s historic adoption of Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025, which enshrines the autonomy plan put forward by Morocco within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, as the only serious, credible, and lasting basis for reaching a political solution to the artificial dispute over the Sahara.

During the meeting, the two officials reviewed bilateral relations and explored new avenues of cooperation. Discussions also focused on implementing bilateral agreements and strengthening cooperation mechanisms.

Regarding the situation in Guinea-Bissau, Bourita reaffirmed Morocco’s approach of non-interference and respect for sovereignty, expressing confidence in the ability of Bissau-Guinean stakeholders to ensure a stable political transition and the country’s development. He also stressed the sustainability of inter-African cooperation, founded on fraternity, friendship, and cooperation, regardless of internal political developments.

Bourita also hailed Guinea-Bissau’s adherence to the regional initiatives led by King Mohammed VI to Promote the development of African Atlantic countries, a strategic south-South cooperation project that also benefits Sahel countries as well as the Gas Pipeline project, to which Guinea-Bissau actively contributes. He expressed Morocco’s gratitude to Guinea-Bissau for its constant and unwavering support regarding the Sahara issue, a position reaffirmed in international forums and reflected through diplomatic actions.

Joao Bernardo Vieira on his part emphasized Morocco’s role in promoting dialogue, stability, and international cooperation. He reaffirmed the importance of the historic ties of friendship, solidarity, and brotherhood with Morocco, based on mutual respect and a shared vision for development and global stability. The Bissau-Guinean official underlined the convergence of views on regional and international issues and expressed confidence that ambitious partnerships would benefit both peoples.

Addressing the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, Vieira reiterated Guinea-Bissau’s unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory. He encouraged initiatives aimed at dialogue and stability, affirming that a lasting political solution is crucial for peace in Africa. He described Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a credible and realistic solution for the definitive settlement of regional disputes, viewing it as evidence of Morocco’s commitment to a constructive and peaceful approach.

This bilateral meeting reflects the positive momentum between Morocco and Guinea-Bissau, characterized by a shared determination to strengthen cooperation. Their alignment on regional and international issues, particularly peace, stability, and development in Africa, further reinforces their partnership.
