UN Mission Urges Libya to Safeguard Press Freedom and Civic Space

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya has called on all parties in Libya to respect and protect freedom of expression, urging an end to intimidation, arbitrary detention and legal harassment targeting journalists and civil Society actors.

In a statement marking World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2026, the mission stressed that a safe and independent media environment is essential for countering misinformation, strengthening accountability and rebuilding public trust. It warned that suppressing journalistic voices deepens instability and undermines prospects for national reconciliation.

UNSMIL further cautioned against the misuse of penal codes, cybercrime laws and counterterrorism legislation to restrict legitimate expression, describing such practices as a threat to the rule of law. It also called for transparent investigations into attacks, threats and killings involving media workers and activists.

The mission emphasized that protecting civic space is critical for credible elections and long-term political stability, reaffirming its readiness to support reforms aimed at strengthening media freedom and democratic participation across Libya.
