University of Kordofan has reported extensive damage to its central campus in El-Obeid after drones it attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) struck the facility on Monday, February 23.
In a statement, the University’s media office said the attack targeted several buildings within the main Campus complex in El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, resulting in significant destruction to infrastructure. No immediate details were provided regarding casualties.
The Emergency Lawyers Association condemned the strike, holding the RSF responsible and describing the incident as part of a growing pattern of assaults on civilian installations. The group stressed that targeting educational institutions constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law, warning that such attacks erode the right to education and jeopardise the future of students caught in the conflict.
Sudan has been engulfed in a protracted war between the national army and the RSF since April 2023. According to United Nations estimates, the conflict has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced approximately 13 million, and fuelled one of the world’s gravest humanitarian crises.
