Sudan’s transitional government holds first session since war erupted

The Sudanese Government has convened in Khartoum on Tuesday, August 26, for the first time since the outbreak of war in April 2023, with Prime Minister Kamil Idris and 22 Cabinet members focusing discussions on launching an inclusive national Dialogue and restoring stability.

The meeting also addressed foreign relations, peacebuilding efforts, and strategies to rebuild the war-torn country. K. Idris highlighted priorities such as post-war reconstruction, economic revival, enhanced security, voluntary return of displaced citizens, and boosting productivity to support recovery.

The Government, which has been operating from Port Sudan, plans to relocate fully to the capital in the coming months. Sudan remains engulfed in a conflict between the national army and the Rapid Support Forces that has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, intensifying an already dire humanitarian crisis. The Khartoum session marks a symbolic step in efforts to reassert state authority and chart a path toward national healing.
