Mauritania: Union Condemns Salary Deductions for Public Media Workers

The Free Union of Press Workers of Mauritania has strongly criticized recent deductions from the salaries of public media employees, describing the measures as illegal and demanding their immediate reversal.

In an official statement, the union highlighted that the deductions exceeded prior agreements reached with the Minister of Culture and his Secretary General, calling the move “a reneging on official commitments” that transforms intended reforms into “a new form of injustice and professional inequality.”

The union further described the deductions, which reportedly reached over 38% of salaries, as «a blatant theft of workers’ rights» and a disregard for President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani’s directives. Public media employees had previously voiced objections, asserting that the reductions violated
agreements intended to regularize the status of retired staff.

The union urged the authorities to engage in serious dialogue to address the issue and ensure fairness for all public media personnel.
