Casablanca’s new airport terminal on track for 2029 delivery

The construction of the new terminal at Casablanca’s Mohammed V Airport is progressing according to schedule and is set for completion in 2029, Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh said.

In an interview with Le360, the minister said the future terminal will significantly boost capacity, bringing the airport’s throughput to 40 million passengers per year, as part of a nationwide strategy to raise the combined capacity of Moroccan airports to 80 million travelers.

On January 7, 2025, the contract for the construction of the new terminal buildings was awarded to a Moroccan company for approximately 12.8 billion dirhams.

The official launch of construction took place on March 31. The project also includes a new runway meeting international standards, capable of accommodating the largest longhaul aircraft.

All works are scheduled to be completed by January 2029, a milestone the minister described as essential for Morocco’s future global connectivity.

The upgraded infrastructure will allow the Kingdom to open direct routes to faraway destinations that previously required transit through Europe.

Beyond the airport expansion, Kayouh highlighted the rapid growth of Royal Air Maroc. The national carrier plans to expand its fleet from 60 to 200 aircraft, including widebody planes for longhaul routes.

RAM already connects Casablanca to Beijing and will launch a direct 14hour flight to Los Angeles this summer. Other distant capitals are expected to follow, reinforcing Casablanca’s role as a global aviation gateway.

Mohammed V Airport will also host a new highspeed rail (TGV) station, which will connect the airport to central Marrakech in 55 minutes and to central Rabat in 35 minutes. From Rabat, travelers will reach Tangier in roughly one hour, creating a seamless mobility corridor across major Moroccan cities.

The top police chief also held talks with the Ambassador of Malaysia to Morocco, Shahabudeen Bin Adam, on mechanisms to strengthen security cooperation between the two countries and to consolidate the partnership in this field so as to include mutual technical assistance and operational cooperation.

These talks reflect the commitment of the DGSN-DGST hub to implementing security partnerships with brotherly and friendly countries through a sustainable vision aimed at consolidating effective complementarity in combating emerging criminal and terrorist threats, as well as strengthening channels for the exchange of operational data and specialized training programs in police-related fields.

They also illustrate the determination of Morocco’s security services to meet requests for cooperation that help strengthen security coordination between Morocco and its brotherly and friendly countries.
