Libya outlines integrated plan to stabilize prices, curb currency smuggling

Libya’s Minister of Economy and Trade, Mohammed Al-Huweij, has announced an integrated policy framework aimed at protecting consumers, stabilizing prices and combating currency smuggling, as part of broader efforts to regulate the domestic market. The plan, developed on the instructions of the Prime Minister, also includes the preparation of a guiding import budget to align imports with real market demand.

In statements released by the ministry, Al-Huweij said incentives are being offered to compliant traders who support the national economy, while warning that authorities will act decisively against currency-smuggling networks and those exploiting citizens’ livelihoods, in close coordination with law-enforcement agencies. He stressed that the ministry will continue to enforce the law in partnership with security and oversight bodies to tackle monopolistic practices, confront what he described as entrenched corruption, and assert state authority within the Libyan market.

As part of transparency measures, the ministry will regularly publish lists of imported goods alongside indicative prices to enable public monitoring and curb price manipulation. Al-Huweij also urged media organizations to rely on official sources, reaffirming the ministry’s openness to public inquiries.

The minister said regulatory campaigns will continue until commercial activity is organized and illegal practices are eliminated, describing the current period as a decisive moment for restoring order to Libya’s trade and protecting the national economy.
