Morocco’s tourism GDP surges 38.4 percent in post-pandemic recovery

Morocco’s tourism sector has confirmed its robust post-pandemic momentum with the tourism gross domestic product registering a remarkable 38.4 percent increase in 2024 compared to 2019 levels, according to the Tourism Satellite Account published by the High Commission for Planning.
The sector’s contribution to national GDP strengthened from 6.8 percent to 7.3 percent, reflecting tourism’s growing economic importance. This performance stems from a sharp recovery in domestic tourism consumption, which reached 201.7 billion dirhams in 2024 compared to 141.4 billion dirhams in 2019, representing a 42.6 percent increase.
The growth primarily resulted from receptive tourism expansion, alongside improvements in domestic and outbound tourism consumption. Receptive tourism consumption, encompassing non-resident tourists including foreign visitors and Moroccans residing abroad, appreciated 46.8 percent from 93.2 billion dirhams in 2019 to 136.9 billion dirhams in 2024.
Domestic and outbound tourism consumption, covering residents traveling within Morocco outside their usual environment and those traveling abroad, progressed 34.6 percent to reach 64.8 billion dirhams. Receptive tourism strengthened its weight in domestic consumption, representing 67.9 percent in 2024 versus 65.9 percent in 2019.
The High Commission indicated that tourism sector production experienced significant growth of 42.3 percent, reaching 181.9 billion dirhams in 2024 against 127.8 billion dirhams in 2019. Sector value added progressed 37 percent to stand at 96.4 billion dirhams.
Supported by a 46 percent increase in net taxes minus subsidies on tourism products, this momentum enabled tourism GDP to reach 116.2 billion dirhams in 2024 versus 83.9 billion dirhams in 2019. Tourism production now represents 6.9 percent of national production in 2024 compared to 6.2 percent in 2019, while tourism value added accounts for 6.8 percent of national economic value added.
