Sahara: Algerian FM’s phone call with lavrov, desperate move to get Moscow support ahead of UNSC Vote
Algerian Foreign minister Ahmed Attaf spoke on the phone with Russian peer Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday in a desperate move to have Russia veto against the American draft resolution supporting Morocco’s Autonomy plan offered by the Kingdom for the Sahara under its sovereignty.
However, Moscow is signaling a shift in its position in favor of Morocco. Lavrov expressed lately his country’s readiness to support the Moroccan Autonomy plan which he described as “a form of self-determination”.
The remarks of Russia’s top diplomat have irked the Algerian regime which boycotted a major international energy conference held in Moscow and retaliated with establishing contacts with Ukraine for talks on partnership projects.
The move shows to the Russians that the Algerian rulers, controlled by the army, are not reliable strategic partners but just one of their major arms buyers in Africa.
After waging a smear media campaign against Russia and supporting Tuareg rebels’ deadly attacks against Russian troops in the Sahel, the Algerian military regime sends its Foreign Minister begging Moscow to use its veto against the draft resolution supporting Morocco.
Furthermore, Russia will never forget or forgive Algiers for betraying it during its energy war against the European Union. Before Russia’s war against Ukraine, Moscow cut gas supplies to Europe, prompting a surge in energy prices and surging inflation across the continent. The traitor Algerian regime stepped in and provided some European countries with its gas, undermining Russian strategy.
The Algerian regime has proven that a traitor remains a traitor forever. It is like a dog’s tail which never straightens.
