French documentary spotlights Morocco’s achievements under King Mohammed VI
Morocco under the reign of King Mohammed VI has become an “African power” thanks to an array of policies and reforms, a French documentary on public TV Public Senat concluded.
The documentary started with the enthronement of King Mohammed VI at the helm of a centuries-old monarchy with longstanding traditions of diplomatic engagement with global powers.
The documentary recalls in particular the King’s visit to Washington in 2022 when he met President Bush, auguring well for long-standing relations between the two countries that culminated in the recognition by the United States of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara territory.
The completion of Morocco’s territorial integrity has been at the heart of the Kingdom’s efforts, combining active diplomacy abroad with steady development push at home, the documentary said.
The letter of President Macron in July backing Morocco’s sovereignty over the territory is in line with Morocco’s legitimate and historic rights to preserve its national unity, it said, citing Morocco’s growing influence in its region.
The Paris support for the autonomy plan as “the only solution” to the Sahara conflict, came after a similar stand by Madrid, the documentary recalls, adding that the two colonial powers’ support for the plan means the issue is on way to a final close.
In Africa in particular, Morocco reaped support on multiple fronts thanks to a multi-pronged approach that put Africa’s development at the heart of the Kingdom’s interaction with the continent.
The triumphal return to the African Union was but an expression of tireless Moroccan engagement with the continent, as evidenced by the multiple visits by the King to African countries, growing investments by Moroccan private and public companies, and defense of African causes at international events, the documentary said.
The French film also highlights Morocco’s successful management of the Arab Spring which brought Islamists to power. The same Islamists would exit power smoothly through the ballot box ten years later in a democratic practice that underscores the role of the Monarchy in safeguarding the country’s stability.
Morocco enhanced its soft power as a tourist destination and football powerhouse, notably following the memorable run in the Qatar World Cup and its successful bids to host the African Cup of Nations 2025 and the World Cup 2030. This was achieved thanks to a forward-looking vision by the King who launched a plan to upgrade the country’s football by focus on early training and world-class sports infrastructure.
Domestically, Morocco’s GDP grew to exceed 140 billion dollars. Economic growth however still must address disparities which Morocco plans to bridge via the Social State plan, which includes the generalization of social safety nets, the upgrade of education, and health reform.
Speaking to eminent feminists, the documentary shed light on the evolution of women’s rights considering an upcoming personal status law that is expected to meet the ambitions of women for more rights in the management of the Moroccan family.
