Libya: HNEC starts registering candidacies for municipal elections next Sunday

The first round of applications for candidates in the local council elections is set to begin on Sunday August 18, according to a statement released by the High National Elections Commission (HNEC).

The Commission urged voters to present their identity documents at polling places in order to obtain their electoral cards if they had submitted their names and information in the final voter registry. It noted that the cards issued for the municipal council elections are entirely separate and unrelated to those issued for the presidential and parliamentary elections in 2021.

This occurred subsequent to the HNEC concluding the phases of voter registration, objections, and court appeals. The HNEC advised anyone interested in running in the municipal elections to study the candidacy guide, comprehend the executive regulations’ electoral processes and systems, and confirm the legitimacy of the applications they have submitted to the HNEC branches and offices’ committees that are registering candidacies.

It emphasized that it would work with the pertinent state institutions to provide some of the necessary documentation to confirm the accuracy of the information submitted in applications, and that it would not hesitate to reject any application that did not comply with the requirements outlined in Chapter 5 of the Executive Regulations.
