Egypt mulls plans to increase accommodation capacity of Cairo airport to 30 million passengers per year

The Egyptian Government is planning to expand by two folds the capacity of the Cairo International Airport to 30 million passengers per year, a cabinet statement issued on Monday January 15 said.

Minister of Civil Aviation Mohamed Abbas presented in a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly the preliminary financial studies for the project which include the project funding through self-financing or commercial financing.

Cairo Airport was in 2023 the country’s busiest airport accommodating 26 million passengers via 198,000 flights.

The expansion of the airport is in line with the country’s plans to attract more tourists. Last year, the target was set on 15 million tourists. Madbouly during the meeting stressed the need to involve the private sector in the management and operation of airports to improve their services and increase revenue.

In November 2023 the Premier announced plans to offer private companies contracts to manage and run airports.
