Mauritania, Togo contemplate ways to bolster relations

Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani and his visiting counterpart from Togo Faure Gnassigbe held Monday talks on means to improve relations between the two countries, reports say.

Togo’s leader arrived Monday in capital Nouakchott for a visit. The purpose of the trip has not been revealed.

The discussions according to media reports took place in the presence of high key Mauritanian officials.

The visit is the second by Faure Gnassigbe since Ghazouani came to power in 2019. The Togolese President visited Mauritania in October 2021. Both countries back then held a summit that addressed issues related to climate and terrorism.

In a joint communique, both countries then expressed their concern at the escalation of violence in the Sahel region, and their fear that it could spread to neighboring countries, particularly those to the south of the Sahel region.
