Sahara: Italian MPs and Experts Commend Spain’s Stand Supporting Morocco’s Autonomy Plan
Several influential Italian MPs and senators have welcomed Madrid’s backing of the Moroccan autonomy plan offered for the Sahara under its sovereignty, saying it is a forward step towards finding a lasting resolution of the Sahara regional conflict.
Commenting on the bold Spanish move in his twitter account, Italian MEP Marco Zanni praised the Spanish government decision, saying the European Union must place stability and progress in the Mediterranean at the heart of its priorities.
For his part, MP Paolo Grimoldi said the Moroccan autonomy plan guarantees peace, security and prosperity in the region, while senator Urania Giulia Papatheu hailed the positive Spanish step, aligning with the French and German positions on the Sahara.
She called on other European countries to openly support the “serious, credible and realistic” solution proposed by Morocco, making reference to the Moroccan autonomy plan.
Italian expert Domenico Letizia said Morocco’s King Mohammed VI played an important role in solving the diplomatic crisis with Spain, serving the interests of both countries and the whole Euro-Mediterranean region.
For Italian columnist Massimiliano Boccolini, the Spanish move, which builds on U.S. recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara and the strong support of Arab and African states, will encourage other European countries to follow suit.
He stressed the need to support any diplomatic effort seeking to strengthen peace and stability in the region, describing the Moroccan King as a champion of tolerance, dialogue and global peace.
