UN fourth Committee has supported the historic Security Council Resolution 2797 which endorsed the Autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty dealing a hard blow the Algerian regime and Polisario separatists.
Yet, in a desperate move to conceal their new diplomatic setback, the deceptive and delusional Algerian junta and Polisario media tried to trumpet false victory drawing international mockery.
The UN Fourth Committee adopted on Thursday its annual resolution on the Sahara, by 152 votes in favor, including that of Morocco, two votes against and seven abstentions.
The Committee decisions used to be adopted without a vote in accordance with a consensual practice established since 2006. However, this year the text was exceptionally submitted to a vote following a last-minute request by the U.S. delegation regarding all draft resolutions.
Morocco voted for the draft resolution of the Fourth Committee because it backed UNSC resolution 2797 recognizing the Moroccan Autonomy plan for the Sahara under the Kingdom’s sovereignty. It also reaffirmed the responsibility of the four parties to the conflict (Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania & Polisario”, calling them to engage in good faith in the political process.
The Committee’s resolution supports the UN-led political process engaged to achieve a lasting, realistic and mutually acceptable political solution, in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions, including its last four resolutions, as recalled in the Secretary-General’s report.
Furthermore, the resolution welcomed the commitment of the parties to continue to show political will and work in an atmosphere propitious for dialogue in order to enter into a more intensive phase of negotiations, in good faith and without preconditions, ensuring the implementation of the UN Security resolutions.
During the Committee debates, the Delegates of several countries as well as petitioners from around the world have expressed clear support for the Autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty, UN Security Council resolution 2797 and the UN-US engagement to advance the political process to end the Sahara regional conflict which has lasted too long and cannot continue for another 50 years.
