Rabat & Addis Ababa Want to Speed up Access to Sustainable Energy

Morocco and Ethiopia are looking into ways of speeding up the implementation of the “Coalition for Access to Sustainable Energy”, an initiative launched by the two African countries during the Climate Action summit convened last year in New York.

The initiative, which aims to ensure full access to energy for the least developed and other developing countries by 2030, was discussed on Monday via videoconference by Moroccan minister of energy Aziz Rabbah and his Ethiopian peer Sileshi Bekele.

The two ministers exchanged view points on how develop activities of the Coalition for access to sustainable energy, promote transfer of know-how and share the best practices in this field.

They reviewed ways to enhance further bilateral cooperation ties particularly in the renewable energy sector which offers huge joint business opportunities.

Talks focused on the support of international organizations, in particular the International Renewable Energy Agency to the Moroccan and Ethiopian projects and initiatives including their coalition for access to sustainable energy.

The two ministers stressed the need to include Malawi, the global coordinator for LDCs, in their next meetings and discussed the modalities for setting up the Coalition’s Secretariat and Advisory Board as well preparations for the Board’s first meeting.

The coalition seeks to promote the universal exchange of know-how on sustainable energy in order to enable countries, particularly the Least Developed, to adopt best practices and models existing in other countries.

It will also help Least Developed countries (LDCs) achieve Sustainable Development objective 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
