Morocco Launches Second National Disability Awareness Campaign Under ‘Barrier-Free’ Slogan

Morocco’s Secretariat of State for Social Inclusion launched the country’s second National Disability Awareness Campaign on 17 July under the slogan “Let’s Change Our Perspective… Toward an Inclusive Environment for Persons with Disabilities, Without Barriers.” The campaign, running through 27 July, is being carried out in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and aims to raise public awareness of the barriers still faced by persons with disabilities in Morocco.

The initiative is built around specialized training and capacity-building programs targeting students, professionals and institutional stakeholders, with the objective of promoting comprehensive inclusion, reducing social and institutional barriers, and strengthening the accountability of public and private institutions toward disability inclusion.

Solidarity, Social Inclusion and Family Minister Naima Ben Yahia stressed in her launch address that a lack of societal sensitization remains a core obstacle, describing disability as a cross-cutting issue that requires shared responsibility extending well beyond her ministry alone. She characterized the campaign as a national call for collective action to build a more inclusive Morocco where every citizen enjoys equal opportunity and full participation in civic life.

Ben Yahia detailed concrete measures already implemented to improve accessibility. A partnership between the ministry and the National Railways Office (ONCF) now covers 30 percent of train ticket costs for persons with disabilities, a measure that has already benefited nearly 8,000 individuals. The minister also announced the signing of partnership agreements worth 76 million dirhams with local authorities aimed at improving accessibility in public spaces and infrastructure.

These accessibility investments are designed to eliminate physical obstacles that limit mobility and access to essential public services, supporting greater independence for persons with disabilities while fostering equal opportunity and a more genuinely inclusive Moroccan society.
