Libya forms emergency Committee to tackle nationwide electricity outages

Libya’s Government of National Unity has established an emergency Committee to investigate the causes of persistent electricity outages and propose solutions to improve grid stability and ensure fair load shedding across regions.

The decision was announced during a high-level meeting chaired by Minister of State for Prime Minister and Cabinet Affairs Mohammed Ben Ghalbon, with participation from senior officials including Mustafa Al-Manea, head of the Executive Team for Prime Minister’s Initiatives and Strategic Projects, and Abdullah Hamouda, General Manager of the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL).

Discussions focused on the state of the national grid, the continuous supply of gas and fuel to power stations, and structural challenges contributing to recurring blackouts. Officials also reviewed ongoing maintenance and infrastructure upgrades within the power sector.

According to GECOL, the South Tripoli Power Plant is now nearly 98% complete, with the first generating unit expected to be operational in the coming days. The project is expected to increase generation capacity, improve grid stability, and reduce the national electricity deficit.
