Libya’s Haftar offers Russia military base on border with Chad, Sudan- media

Libya’s renegade general Khalifa Haftar reportedly offered Russia a military base near the border with Chad and Sudan, confirming Moscow’s ambitions to make Libya its new African hub, replacing Syria, Italian news agency Nova said.

Citing Libyan sources, Nova said Russia was transferring equipment and soldiers to the Maaten Al Sarra base in southern Libya to strengthen its presence in the Sahel, where it has forged alliances with anti-west military juntas.

With the fall of Bashar Al Assad in Syria, Russia began a retreat of its soldiers, fighter jets, and equipment, a large part of which was transferred to Libya.

Already in December, Russia began upgrading the base preparing for a retreat from Syria, where Russia has a naval and an air base.
