Libyan Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah paid this Week a visit to Italy where he conferred with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on deepening bilateral relations through a strategic partnership framework.
The discussions covered the expedited transfer of Libyan prisoners serving sentences in Italy, in line with existing legal agreements and a previously established memorandum. Both sides emphasized the need to accelerate implementation processes to ensure orderly completion of sentences in Libya.
A key pillar of the engagement focused on migration governance, particularly within a quadrilateral cooperation mechanism involving Libya, Italy, Turkey, and Qatar. The leaders reviewed strategies to combat irregular migration, enhance border and coastal surveillance, and strengthen coordination on voluntary return and repatriation schemes with international partners. Libya reiterated the scale of pressure it faces and the importance of shared regional responsibility.
On the economic front, the two governments prioritized the acceleration of natural gas projects and expanded cooperation in the energy sector to safeguard stable supplies across the Mediterranean. They also reaffirmed commitment to building on existing development frameworks to reinforce long-term stability and mutual growth.
The talks underscored a broader strategic intent: positioning Libya–Italy relations as a stabilizing axis for regional security, energy security, and sustainable development cooperation.
