U.S. Embassy in Algeria & EU Denounce Polisario Smara Attacks

The Embassy of the United States in Algeria has sent a strong message to the Algerian regime which funds, arms and shelters the Polisario separatist militias who claimed responsibility for the terror rocket attacks launched against the Moroccan Saharan city of Smara.

“The status quo in Western Sahara serves no one’s interest,” said the U.S. embassy in Algiers in a comment posted on its X account, stressing that the current situation “cannot continue.”

The U.S. diplomatic mission also cited the statement issued by the U.S. Mission to the UN condemning the Polisario attacks which threaten regional stability and the progress made towards peace.

The American Mission also reiterated UNSC support for the Moroccan Autonomy Proposal under the Kingdom’s sovereignty.

After the Polisario Smara attacks, U.S. Ambassador to Morocco Duke Buchan visited the Moroccan Sahara city of Dakhla where a deepwater port, under construction, offers a vast new opportunities for trade and investment for this region and the United States.

“In Dhakla, American and Moroccan doctors stood side by side providing medical care to the people of the Moroccan Sahara. Meanwhile, those against peace launched missiles at civilian infrastructure,” said the American Ambassador, making reference to the Polisario terrorist attacks.

For his part, EU Ambassador to Morocco Dimiter Tzantchev said the recent attack on Smara should be condemned. “Now is not the time for escalation, but for negotiation, as per UNSC Resolution 2797, taking as a basis Morocco’s Autonomy Plan with a view to achieving a just, lasting & mutually acceptable solution consistent with the UN Charter,” said the EU diplomat.

France, the UN mission in the Sahara MINURSO, and the UN Sahara envoy Staffan de Mistura have also condemned the Polisario terrorist rocket attacks on Smara.
