Morocco and Finland Deepen Political and Economic Partnership

Morocco and Finland have reaffirmed their commitment to a strengthened bilateral relationship following high-level talks in Rabat between Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Finnish counterpart Elina Valtonen, with discussions spanning economic cooperation, regional security, and key geopolitical issues.
On the economic front, Bourita highlighted notable progress in trade relations, pointing to the presence of 40 Finnish companies currently operating on Moroccan soil. He announced the forthcoming visit of a Moroccan business delegation to Helsinki, signaling a concerted effort to deepen commercial ties and explore new investment opportunities across both markets.
Security cooperation also featured prominently in the exchange, with both sides addressing counterterrorism and irregular migration as shared priorities requiring sustained bilateral coordination. Regional and international flashpoints — including the situation in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as Iranian actions toward Gulf states — were discussed within the broader context of the two countries’ aligned positions on global stability.
On the digital and technological front, Valtonen underscored that artificial intelligence, internet infrastructure, and fifth-generation telecommunications were central to Finland’s vision for the partnership, areas where Finnish expertise and Moroccan ambition could yield meaningful synergies.
The Sahara issue featured as a cornerstone of the diplomatic dialogue. Finland reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan, formally characterizing it as “a serious and credible basis” for reaching a definitive and mutually acceptable political settlement. Both ministers welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025) and reaffirmed their backing for the United Nations-led process aimed at achieving a just and lasting solution.
Morocco, in turn, expressed its support for Finland’s candidacy for a seat on the UN Security Council, a gesture that underscored the deepening mutual trust between the two nations and their shared investment in a rules-based international order.
