UNHRC: Forty Countries Reiterate Firm Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Sahara

A group of 40 States have reiterated steadfast backing for Morocco’s full sovereignty over its entire Saharan territory and welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2797, endorsing the Moroccan Autonomy under the Kingdom’s sovereignty.

In their joint statement made at the 62nd session of UN Human Rights Council convening in Geneva, these countries commended UN Security Council Sahara Resolution 2797 which calls for relaunching the political process with the engagement of the four parties to the conflict (Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and Polisario0, taking as basis Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal with a view to achieving a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable resolution.

They also hailed Morocco’s “constructive, voluntary and profound” interaction with the UN Human rights system, in particular the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council. These UN Human rights bodies visited Morocco, including the Sahara, with a view to promoting and strengthening respect for human rights throughout its territory.

The group also welcomed the opening by many countries of Consulates in the Saharan cities of Dakhla and Laâyoune, a move which contributed to strengthening economic cooperation, investment and regional and continental development.
