The U.S. bipartisan draft legislation introduced by congressman Joe Wilson for designating Polisario Foreign terrorist organization (FTO) is gaining momentum with the support of a growing number of U.S. lawmakers.
Republican Congressman Zack Nun (Iowa) has joined lately the list of Representatives sponsoring the “Polisario Front Terrorist Designation Act” to impose sanctions against the Algeria-backed separatist group.
Co-sponsored by Democrat Representative Jimmy Panetta, the H.R.4119 is backed congressmen Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Jefferson Shreve (R-IN), Randy Fine (R-FL), Lance Gooden (R-TX) and Pat Harrigan (R-NC). More congressmen are expected to join the push for designating the Polisario as FTO.
The U.S. Congress is escalating legislative measures against the Polisario in parallel with the US-UN led talks gathering Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario, taking as a basis Morocco’s autonomy proposal, as per Security Council resolution 2797 (2025).
The draft FTO legislation will restrict the Polisario movements abroad, freeze its funds in international banks, confiscate its assets, and ban any activities or gatherings related to the separatist group.
Any entity or country associated with funding, supporting, or cooperating with the Polisario will face criminal charges and economic sanctions.
