Tanger Med outperforms Mediterranean, African peers in 2025 with record performance

The Tanger Med port complex posted new traffic records in 2025, driven by rising container volumes, expanding bulk activity and continued growth in passenger and truck movements, according to the port authority’s annual report, which said the performance helped the port keep its position as the largest in Africa and the Mediterranean.

The port’s four container terminals handled 11,106,164 containers in 2025, an 8.4% increase from a year earlier, the port authority said in a statement.

The rise was supported by the expansion of Terminal TC4, operated by APM Terminals, reinforcing Tanger Med’s role as a key transshipment hub linking Europe, West Africa and major East-West maritime routes.

Total volume handled at the complex reached 161 million tons, a performance the report describes as a sign of “strategic stability.”

Truck traffic also strengthened, with 535,203 trucks processed in 2025, up 3.6% year-on-year. The increase was underpinned by higher exports of industrial goods (+4.8%) and agri-food products (+4.3%), confirming the port’s role as a logistics gateway for Moroccan industry.

Passenger and vehicle flows continued to grow. The port handled 3,220,422 passengers (+5.7%) and 895,341 cars (+5%) in 2025. The Marhaba travel campaign took place under “optimal conditions,” supported by the full rollout of a fixed-date ticketing system designed to better match ferry capacity with demand.

The automotive segment declined, with vehicle traffic down 12% to 526,862 units. This included 327,569 vehicles exported from Renault plants in Melloussa and Casablanca, 126,874 from Stellantis Kénitra, and 39,751 in transshipment. The report attributes the drop to production adjustments tied to global demand trends rather than structural weakness.

Tanger Med welcomed 1,319 mega-ships over 290 meters long, an 8.4% increase, reflecting both shipping lines’ capacity optimization strategies and the port’s ability to handle larger vessels with fewer overall calls.
