DEFENSE: MOROCCO EXPLORING ACQUSITION OF KOREAN K2 TANKS & MEDIUM RANGE AIR DEFENSE SYSTEM

Morocco is reportedly exploring the acquisition of up to 400 South Korean K2 Black Panther tanks and the Cheongung medium-range air defense system as strategic partnership between Seoul and Rabat is gaining momentum.

According to experts, the potential deal would enable Moroccan army to diversify military weaponry and modernize its land and air defense capabilities.

The K2 Black Panther is Korea’s fourth-generation battle tank (MBT), developed by Hyundai Rotem group. It is equipped with advanced technology, a powerful 120mm gun, sophisticated composite armour, active protection systems, and excellent mobility with unique hydraulic suspension for difficult terrain.

The K2ME model, a variant specifically designed for arid environments and temperatures exceeding 50 °C, has particularly caught the attention of Moroccan military experts interested also in technology transfer and local maintenance. Morocco already operates U.S.-made M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams tanks, including M1A2 SEPv3 variants delivered starting in 2023.

The North African Kingdom is also interested in the Korean medium-range surface-to-air missile system, designed to intercept aircraft and cruise missiles. It is deemed a cost-effective alternative to systems like Patriot. Discussions also include K9 howitzers and KSS-III submarines.

The acquisition of Korean weapons would enable Moroccan army to modernize its armament and diversify procurement, while maintaining interoperability with Western standards.

In February 2025, Hyundai Rotem group won a $1.5 billion contract to supply electric trains to Moroccan railway national company. Another Korean firm, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, has joined forces with the Moroccan leader in port construction, Somagec, in bidding for Casablanca shipyard project. The Moroccan-Korean partnership is very likely to continue expanding.
