Morocco’s Digital Dawn: A Stellar Showing at GITEX Global 2024

As the sun rose over Dubai’s skyline on October 14, 2024, it illuminated more than just the city’s iconic structures. It shone a spotlight on Morocco’s digital ambitions as the 44th edition of GITEX Global, the world’s premier technology showcase, opened its doors. Under the banner of “Global Cooperation to Forge a Future AI Economy,” the event became a stage for Morocco to unveil its technological prowess and forward-thinking digital strategy.

Amidst the bustling halls filled with over 6,500 exhibitors and 1,800 startups from nearly 180 countries, Morocco’s presence stood out. Led by Ghita Mezzour, Minister in charge of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, the Moroccan delegation arrived with a clear mission: to showcase the kingdom’s digital transformation and attract global attention to its burgeoning tech ecosystem.

The centerpiece of Morocco’s participation was the reveal of “Digital Morocco 2030,” an ambitious national strategy that promises to revolutionize the country’s digital landscape. As Mezzour took the stage, her words painted a vivid picture of a future where digital services are accessible to all Moroccans, where public administration is just a click away, and where a new generation of tech-savvy youth drives economic growth.

“Visitors to Morocco may be surprised by the significant advancements in digital and modern technology,” Mezzour remarked, her voice filled with pride. “We need to share our story more widely to inform the world of our achievements.” And share they did. From the innovative startups showcasing their solutions at the Expand North Star 2024 Forum to the Ministry of Health and Social Protection’s exhibits on digitalized healthcare services, Morocco’s digital story unfolded chapter by chapter.

For the first time, the Casablanca Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Services joined the country’s GITEX delegation, symbolizing the private sector’s commitment to this digital journey. Mohamed Elfane, an elected member of the CCISCS, spoke of capitalizing on the momentum created by the new digital strategy. “We aim to forge partnerships with experts and investors, particularly from the Middle East, to benefit the Moroccan ecosystem,” he explained, his words underscoring the global ambitions of Morocco’s digital push.

As attendees navigated the Moroccan pavilion, they witnessed a microcosm of the country’s digital ecosystem. Startups in artificial intelligence rubbed shoulders with established players in cybersecurity. Representatives from “Merchour” hubs, the grassroots centers of digital skill development spread across the kingdom, shared space with officials discussing plans to increase digital transactions from 17.4 billion to a staggering 40 billion dirhams.

The air was charged with potential. Redouane El Haloui, president of APEBI, Morocco’s federation for IT and offshoring, saw beyond the glittering displays. “The Middle East is a very promising market,” he noted, his eyes scanning the horizon of opportunity. “The UAE is ahead in terms of digitalization. For us, it’s a means of drawing inspiration, but also of penetrating this market.”

As the days progressed, Morocco’s digital narrative gained momentum. Partnerships were forged, investments discussed, and global tech leaders expressed interest in the North African nation’s digital awakening. The strategy’s focus on digital inclusion resonated with many, as Mezzour detailed plans to make digital services accessible even to those unfamiliar with technology, through advancements in artificial intelligence and voice control.

As GITEX Global 2024 drew to a close this October 18, the impact of Morocco’s participation lingered. The country had not just showcased its technological advancements; it had positioned itself as a rising star in the global digital firmament. The “Digital Morocco 2030” strategy, with its emphasis on youth empowerment, digital skills development, and economic growth through technology, had captured the imagination of the international tech community.

In the afterglow of GITEX, as the Moroccan delegation prepared to return home, there was a palpable sense of achievement. They were leaving Dubai with more than just business cards and potential deals. They were carrying back the seeds of a digital revolution, ready to be planted in the fertile soil of Morocco’s technological landscape.

As the sun set on GITEX Global 2024, it was clear that for Morocco, a new day in its digital journey had just begun. The world had taken notice, and the future – digital, inclusive, and innovative – was calling.
