UN Records Fresh Displacement Surge in Sudan’s Kordofan Amid Escalating Insecurity

The United Nations has reported that 50,445 people fled Sudan’s Kordofan region between Oct. 25 and Dec. 17, as deteriorating security conditions triggered repeated waves of displacement.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 39 displacement-triggering incidents were documented in the region from Oct. 25. Of those affected, approximately 40,350 people were displaced from six localities in North Kordofan, 9,845 from nine localities in South Kordofan, and 250 from West Kordofan.
Sudanese authorities, the United Nations, and local and international rights groups have accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of abuses, including rape, in several cities across the region. The RSF has denied deliberately targeting civilians, while acknowledging some “violations” in Darfur and stating that investigations have been launched.
Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF controls all five Darfur states in the west, with the exception of parts of North Darfur still held by the army. The Sudanese army maintains control over most areas of the remaining 13 states across the south, north, east and centre, including Khartoum.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023, has killed thousands and displaced millions, entrenching a humanitarian crisis that continues to ripple across the country.
