Mauritania Signs $30 Million Budget Support Agreement with OPEC Fund for International Development

On Tuesday, December 16, Mauritania’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Development, Dr. Abdallahi Ould Souleymane Ould Cheikh Sidiya, received a delegation from the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) in Nouakchott to sign a US$30 million budget support agreement.
The delegation was led by Dr Mahmoud Khan, Director of Operations for Africa, and included Mr. Tarek Ladjzouzi, head of the Mauritania portfolio within OFID.
The agreement, the first of its kind between Mauritania and OFID, had been approved by OFID’s Board of Directors on 28 November and signed by its Managing Director. During the meeting, both sides discussed measures to accelerate the implementation of recommendations from the high-level development roundtable in Vienna on 16 June, as well as mechanisms to align OFID’s interventions with national development priorities outlined in the General Policy Declaration of Prime Minister Moctar Ould Djay.
Discussions also focused on strengthening financing effectiveness through flexible instruments addressing macroeconomic needs, supporting medium- and long-term financial stability, and promoting strategic areas such as public investment projects and private sector development to enhance job creation and national economic competitiveness.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Ministry, including the Director General of Financing and Economic Cooperation, Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Nani, his deputy Mr. Mahfoudh Ould Mahmoud Brahim, and the Director of Financing Agreements, Ms. Fatimetou Mint Ivekou.
