Tunisia Escalates Diplomatic Protest Over Protocol Breach

On 27 November 2025, President Kaïs Saïed instructed Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti to deliver a second “firmly formulated” protest to a foreign State representative in Tunisia, following an initial protest sent two days earlier.
Meeting at Carthage Palace, Saïed emphasised the imperative of respecting diplomatic protocol and national sovereignty, declaring that any disregard for these principles would not be tolerated. He stressed that Tunisia’s sovereign decisions are non-negotiable and that foreign actors must acknowledge the country’s history and the will of its people before offering assessments or advice.
The directive comes after Tunisia formally protested to European Union ambassador Giuseppe Perrone on 25 November, regarding actions outside recognised diplomatic procedures. Saïed highlighted that certain foreign parties’ timing was “premeditated,” coinciding with a court ruling, and warned that any attempts at confrontation would be met with an appropriate response.
He reaffirmed that Tunisia will never renounce its sovereignty or the will of its citizens, underscoring the nation’s determination to assert its independence in international affairs.
