Morocco receives global congratulatory messages after UN Security Council vote in favor of autonomy plan

The United Nations Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2797 has sparked a wave of diplomatic reactions, as Morocco marks a diplomatic victory in favor of its autonomy plan for the Sahara territory.

The resolution defines autonomy under Morocco’s sovereignty as “a most feasible outcome” and calls for the parties to negotiate on that basis without pre-conditions.

Reactions from key global players were swift.

The United Arab Emirates expressed full support, describing the resolution as “an essential step toward a definitive political solution” and reaffirming solidarity with Morocco’s territorial integrity.

The United States, which played a central role in drafting the text, welcomed the vote as “historic.” U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz urged all parties to engage in serious negotiations based on Morocco’s “credible and realistic Autonomy Proposal.”

Senior adviser Massad Boulos echoed this stance, highlighting Washington’s commitment to fostering dialogue between Morocco and Algeria to build trust and achieve lasting peace.

Gérôme Bonnafont, France’s Permanent Representative to the UN, declared: “Autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty constitutes the only basis for achieving a political solution in line with the Council’s resolutions.”

He emphasized that an “increasing international consensus” is forming around this approach and called the resolution a “collective success.”

The French Embassy in Rabat also issued a statement describing the resolution as “historic” and a “major step” in the UN-led political process. Ambassador Christophe Lecourtier noted that the adoption “concludes months of intense diplomatic efforts by Morocco, supported by close coordination with France, and opens the way for a new phase of negotiations where Morocco’s autonomy proposal will occupy a central place.”

Similarly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated King Mohammed VI, calling the resolution “a triumph for long-lasting, determined Moroccan diplomacy.”

For Morocco, the resolution represents a diplomatic victory of unprecedented scale. Rabat views the Security Council’s alignment on autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as a turning point in the international approach to the Sahara issue.
