Sudan: Renewed clashes displace hundreds in North Kordofan and Darfur

On Sunday, October 19, 2025, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported that at least 1,730 people have been displaced from Sudan’s North Kordofan and North Darfur States amid escalating violence and insecurity.

According to the UN agency, around 230 residents fled the Al-Mazroub area last Thursday following worsening security conditions, while 1,500 others were uprooted from Abu Gamra in North Darfur, where tensions remain high. The surge in violence follows the killing of a tribal chief and several elders in North Kordofan, an attack attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), though the group has denied involvement.

Darfur’s regional governor, Minni Arko Minnawi, announced that joint forces allied with the Sudanese army had reclaimed control of Abu Gamra from the RSF, marking a rare victory amid months of fierce fighting. The clashes form part of the broader civil conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023 and has since left over 20,000 people dead and displaced more than 14 million. While the UN and local authorities provide these figures, independent research from US universities suggests the death toll may be closer to 130,000, underscoring the devastating human cost of the prolonged conflict.
