Sudanese authorities have reopened the Khartoum-Medani railway line this Monday after a four-year suspension, following the completion of maintenance and rehabilitation works by the Sudan Railways Corporation.
A ceremony was held in Wad Medani, the capital of Al-Gezira State, to mark the restoration of operations on the key railway route, which had been affected by conflict, damaged tracks and years of underinvestment.
The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Saif Al-Nasr Haroun, said the reopening marked the first step in a wider plan to revive Sudan’s railway sector and support economic recovery by improving the movement of goods and passengers.
The Director of the Sudan Railways Corporation, Mousa Al-Qawm Al-Jahdi, said the rehabilitation work was completed within 40 days by the corporation’s workers under challenging conditions. Sudan’s railway network, which dates back to 1897, spans about 4,725 kilometres and has historically played a major role in connecting regions and supporting trade.
