Sudan: Over 6,000 flee West Darfur amid RSF threats -UN agency

More than 6,000 people fled Kulbus and nearby villages in Sudan’s West Darfur on Monday, following threats from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said this Thursday,  July 2.

The UN agency estimated that 6,005 residents were displaced from Kulbus, Wadi Bardi, Arwa, and Adarb, with most crossing into neighbouring Chad. It described the situation in the area as “highly tense and volatile” and said it continues to monitor developments closely.

The displacement comes amid ongoing clashes between the Sudanese army and RSF-aligned forces. Government troops later announced they had captured Kulbus after fighting, with Darfur Governor Minni Arko Minnawi claiming the RSF had been defeated in the town.

Kulbus, located near the Chad border about 160 kilometres from El Geneina, sits within a wider conflict zone where the RSF holds most of Darfur while the army controls large parts of the rest of Sudan. The war, which erupted in 2023, has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, killing tens of thousands and displacing about 13 million people.
