French anchovy processor invests in energy efficiency at Tangier facility

La Conserverie des 2 Mers, a French-owned anchovy processing company based in Tangier’s Moghogha industrial zone, has secured funding from MED TEST to modernize its production facility with advanced energy efficiency and environmental protection measures. The investment marks a significant step toward sustainable food processing in Morocco’s thriving seafood industry.

The subsidiary of French seafood specialist Conserveries Micelli will achieve remarkable energy savings of 65% from its current annual consumption, translating to nearly half a million dirhams in reduced costs within the first year. Additionally, the upgrades will cut water consumption by 22% across all production stages, demonstrating the economic viability of sustainable manufacturing practices.

The MED TEST funding, provided by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in support of green industry initiatives, enables comprehensive facility improvements including enhanced anchovy waste valorization systems and substantial reduction in liquid effluent discharge. A new wastewater treatment station will be installed to meet stringent environmental standards.
La Conserverie des 2 Mers currently generates annual revenues exceeding 60 million dirhams entirely from exports, employing over 350 workers at its Tangier facility. The company specializes in two flagship products: salted anchovy preserves and marinated anchovies, both meeting international quality standards through ISO 22001 and IFS 5 certifications.

The modernization project aligns with Morocco’s broader industrial sustainability goals, positioning the country as a leader in environmentally responsible seafood processing. Following successful implementation of these upgrades, the company aims to achieve ISO 14001 certification, which defines requirements for comprehensive environmental management systems.

This investment exemplifies how traditional food processing industries can successfully balance profitability with environmental stewardship, setting a benchmark for sustainable practices in Morocco’s expanding agri-food sector while maintaining competitiveness in demanding international markets.
