Indian PM travels to Morocco early July to strengthen further strategic partnership

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Morocco in early July within the frame of a five-nation tour including Africa, Latin America, and West Asia, according to Indian press reports.

His first stop will be in Morocco, India’s emerging security and economic partner in North Africa. This shows the strategic importance of Rabat for New Delhi in the new world order taking shape.

Modi’s tour, planned ahead of the BRICS summit in Brazil (6-7 July), aims to strengthen India’s leadership in the Global South and foster an anti-terror. The trip includes stops in Argentina, Trinidad &Tobago, and Jordan.

In May, India’s ambassador to Morocco said his country “has been supportive of steps being taken to find a negotiated and enduring political solution to the Sahara issue”. “We have long supported the process under the auspices of the United Nations, including the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy,” Ambassador Sanjay Rana had told Assahifa daily.

“India appreciates Morocco’s role as a pillar of stability and moderation in the region. Our growing partnership with Morocco is rooted in shared values, strategic trust, and a vision for peace and prosperity across Africa and beyond”, he stressed, lauding the two countries’ shared commitment to cooperation, development, and global peace.

He also said he is convinced the Moroccan-Indian strategic partnership will continue to grow stronger across sectors—from trade and education to defense and digital innovation.

India imports key phosphates and chemicals from Morocco and exports machinery, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and automobiles. Morocco is looking forward to attracting Indian investment in renewable energy, IT, agro-tech, automotive, and manufacturing sectors.

In September 2024, “TATA Advanced Systems” signed a strategic partnership agreement with Morocco’s National Defense Administration for the establishment of a plant in the Kingdom to produce armored combat vehicle WhAP 8×8 for the Moroccan army. This is a significant milestone in Rabat-New Delhi strategic partnership.
