Metacon chooses Morocco for major wind power-to-hydrogen pilot plant
Swedish-based Metacon has been awarded a $ 2 million contract to supply a 1 MW pressurized alkaline electrolysis plant to a major renewable energy company in Morocco, one of Africa’s largest wind power investors.
The project involves delivering a turn-key, containerized electrolysis system powered by wind turbines to produce green hydrogen off-grid. This pilot plant aims to refine wind turbine-coupled electrolysis technology as a precursor to larger-scale industrial production of green hydrogen, e-fuels, and green ammonia in Morocco.
“This is hopefully the beginning of a long-term relationship for realizing their ambitions for large-scale production of green hydrogen, e-fuels, and green ammonia in Morocco and beyond,” said Christer Wikner, Pdt. & CEO of Metacon.
The project aligns with Morocco’s broader green hydrogen strategy, leveraging its abundant solar and wind resources to position itself as a key player in the global energy transition
Morocco has an established renewable energy model, leveraging its proximity to Europe and pre-established energy interconnection infrastructure, making the country’s potential for green hydrogen even better.
In March, Morocco approved green hydrogen projects aiming to produce ammonia, steel and industrial fuel worth $32.5 billion.
