Moroccan FM meets influential Congressmen as Washington reiterates support on Sahara issue

Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita held talks with influential members of the US Congress, following Washington’s reaffirmation of its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara territory and its support for the autonomy plan as sole framework for negotiations.

On the second day of his first visit to Washington since Trump’s comeback, Bourita discussed Morocco-US partnership with congressman Mario Diaz Balart.

Balart tweeted saying he reaffirmed his “steadfast support for president Trump’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara territory.”

“Under King Mohammed VI’s reign, Morocco has become a crucial US ally and partner for peace in the middle east…,” he said.

“Now, more than ever, it is crucial we continue to advance our shared principles, and stand firm against brutal, repressive governments around the world,” he said.

Bourita also met congressman Joe Wilson, an ardent critic of Iranian destabilizing acts and proxies in the region.

“Grateful to meet with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita to discuss our long-standing partnership and commitment to peace in the region including the stability of Western Sahara from Polisario terrorists. The US stands with Morocco for peace,” he said on X.

Bourita later met Sebastian Gorka, Senior Director for Counterterrorism at the National Security Council. Talks focused on fostering cooperation in favor of African stability.
