Spain set to have better ties with Morocco- FM

Spain is committed to further improving ties with Morocco, said the Spanish Foreign Minister, describing Morocco as a “key partner.”

“Spain should have the best relations with a neighbor like Morocco. This is a rule of our foreign policy and state policy,” foreign minister Jose Manuel Albares told the Spanish Senate.

“Morocco is a key partner in the fight against terrorism, in the dismantling of jihadist cells, and in the fight against irregular immigration, in addition to its importance for the Spanish economy,” he said.

Albares recalled that trade between the two countries exceeded 21 billion euros, with 17,000 Spanish firms exporting to Morocco.

Over 1 million Moroccans live in Spain, while 17,000 Spaniards live in Morocco, he said.

At the political level, a new era was ushered in relations between Morocco and Spain, since Madrid clearly backed Morocco’s autonomy plan in the Sahara territory.
