Algerian military regime offers deals to avoid Trump’s sanctions
The tyrannical and corrupt Algerian regime, which has invested for years in the axis of evil threatening U.S. interests in North Africa and Middle East, has shifted lately positions after President Donald Trump returned to the White House.
In a bid to skip American sanctions, the deceitful Algerian diplomacy is trying hard by all means to seduce and convince the Trump administration that Algeria has changed, offering face-saving deals. These include normalization of relations with Israel, massive purchases of American weapons ($15 billion), intelligence cooperation, and access to Algeria natural & critical mineral resources.
But the flip-flop shows the fragility of Algerian junta, its fear and a lack of a clear strategic vision. In 2020, the Algerian regime lashed out at Trump’s decision of recognizing Moroccanness of the Sahara, mocking the U.S. presidential tweet in Algerian TV stations.
In 2023, President Abdelmajid Tebboune made anti-American statements during his visit to Moscow. He also denounced the hegemony of the American dollar in a drive a join to BRICS but Algeria application was rejected.
Algeria is currently experiencing unprecedented diplomatic isolation since its creation in 1962. In deep crisis with France over the Sahara issue, Algiers has also strained relations with all neighbors, except, Tunisia of Kaiss Saied.
The Algerian junta’s current panic can also be explained by growing pressure from the United States over its support for the Polisario armed militia. The Trump administration is reportedly considering the designation of the Polisario a terrorist organization. Such a move would be a diplomatic disaster for the Algerian regime which shelters, funds and arms the separatist militias for nearly five decades, undermining regional stability and the national security of Morocco, a strategic ally of the United States.
Faced with this existential dilemma, the feckless Algerian regime is trying to sell illusions, showing the depth of its diplomatic crisis exacerbated by the growing international support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire Saharan territory.
The Algerian army depends almost entirely on Russian weapons, ammunition, spare parts and training, making its transition to American defense systems technically impossible at least in the short and medium term.
According to some experts, the Algerian proposals can be an opportunity to extract sensitive data about Russian military systems without establishing a lasting partnership. The impulsive Algerian regime and its untrustworthiness make any American strategic commitment highly unlikely.
