Syria’s new president invited to attend emergency Arab summit

Syria’s newly appointed President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has received an invitation from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi to attend an emergency Arab League summit in Cairo on March 4, as confirmed by a statement from the Syrian presidency on Sunday February 23.

This marks a significant development in Syria’s efforts to rebuild its relationships with the Arab world following the downfall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Sharaa, who emerged as president after his group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), played a leading role in ousting Assad in December, is heading a transitional government. Since his appointment, he has prioritized the rebuilding of diplomatic ties with Arab nations and has expressed a commitment to a political transition. This includes establishing an inclusive government and preparing for elections, which he believes could take up to four years to arrange.

While Egypt has been cautious in its response to Sharaa’s presidency due to its concerns about Islamist influence, officials have emphasized the need for Syria’s new administration to pursue a politically inclusive path free from foreign interference.

The summit will address key Arab concerns, including opposition to U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial plan to redevelop Gaza into a beach resort and his proposals regarding displaced Palestinians.
