Algeria fails to secure release of its pro-Assad fighters held in Syria

The Algerian regime’s envoy, foreign minister Ahmed Attaf, failed to convince Syria’s new authorities to release the Algerian soldiers who have fought alongside the Bashar Al Assad regime.

Algeria had been stood by Syria’s Assad regime till his downfall, calling Asharaa and his HTS fighters as “terrorists.”

The Syrian TV and French international media, Monte Carlo, reported that Syria’s new ruler Ahmed Al-Sharaa declined Algeria’s request to release some 500 soldiers including a senior official and members of the Polisario separatist militias.

Al-Sharaa said the detained fighters will be subject to a fair trial on par with other armed men who backed Bashar’s bloody war against the Syrian people, the media reported.

Algeria has been a fervent supporter of Bashar in international and Arab fora as well as on the ground sending soldiers and arms.

In 2016, a regime mouthpiece, Echourouk, announced the death in the Syrian battlefield of the first Algerian fighting for Assad regime.
