UK Expresses Concern Over Humanitarian and Political Crises in South Sudan Amid Sudanese Conflict
The United Kingdom has voiced grave concerns over the escalating humanitarian and political crises affecting South Sudan, particularly in the wake of the Sudanese conflict.
Between 11 and 15 January, civilian attacks, including those on South Sudanese nationals in Wad Madani, Sudan, triggered widespread unrest in South Sudan on 16-17 January. This violence has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation, with over a million displaced people fleeing Sudan and seeking refuge in South Sudan.
The UK commended South Sudan’s open-door policy and support for those fleeing the conflict but acknowledged the immense challenges ahead in addressing the needs of the displaced population.
The United Kingdom has committed on February 5 to increasing its humanitarian support to South Sudan and its neighbouring countries, recognizing the severe impact of the ongoing conflict in Sudan on the wider region. The UK also praised the efforts of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) for facilitating vital humanitarian operations, despite the considerable obstacles posed by the ongoing violence. However, the situation remains precarious, and experts warn that 2025 will be a critical year for both the region and the humanitarian response. The UK’s increased support aims to mitigate the challenges of displacement and ensure the continued delivery of humanitarian aid to the affected populations.
Politically, the UK has expressed concern over South Sudan’s unstable situation, emphasising the lack of progress in the unification of the country’s security forces and ongoing restrictions on political and civic freedoms. While the UK acknowledged South Sudan’s progress towards the 2026 election timeline, it urged the Transitional Government to publish a detailed work plan for the elections and provide the necessary funding to ensure a credible, peaceful, and inclusive process. The UK’s call for the government to prioritise funding for elections and security forces’ salaries highlights the critical steps needed to achieve sustainable peace and stability in the country.
