Morocco’s top port operator expands to East Africa

Morocco’s leading port operator, Marsa Maroc, plans to invest in the capital of Djibouti’s Damerjog Oil FZE, which is funding an east African oil and gas terminal and pipelines.

Marsa Maroc has created a subsidiary dubbed Marsa Maroc International Logistics to oversee its African expansion. The new company will run the Djibouti investment through its offshoot Marsa Djibouti, according to a decree published in the official gazette.

Marsa Maroc International Logistics will open its capital to foreign investors as it seeks to expand in the East African gas and oil supply chains, the gazette said.

The new subsidiary will also run Marsa Benin which is operating terminal 1 and 5 in Cotonou’s port.

Marsa Maroc operates nine Moroccan ports including Tanger Med 1 terminal.

It has signed in June a 25-year agreement to operate a 3.4 million TEU terminal at the Nador West Med Port.
